How the Society is Structured

The society is run entirely by volunteers and it has no paid staff.

The recently produced Business Plan sets out the priorities for the society for the twelve months from June 2008. These priorities include obtaining office premises that will allow volunteers to help administer the increasing work of the society. Most of the Trustees and members of the various committees are sufferers of PA. or are a close relative of a sufferer.

Structure

After lengthy consultations the society has adopted a written Strategic Plan and has recently undergone major organisational restructuring, based on the plan, that will allow it to meet the increasing demands for its services both now and in the future.

Trustees

The number of Trustees is now eight and their role has now been defined as overseeing the work of the Management Council and the sub-committees of the Council. The Trustees have a Chairman, a Secretary a Treasurer and a Membership Secretary. The Trustees meet twice a year in Birmingham, U.K. The Trustees are responsible for ensuring that the society carries out its activities with the law and is the final arbiter in any dispute. It is the Trustees that have the final say in policy matters and can appoint or remove any member of any committee or sub-committee. The Trustees are also responsible for organising the Annual General Meeting of the society.

Management Council

There are currently six members of the council that meets every two weeks using online conferencing. The council formulates policies for approval by the Trustees, and chooses between different policy options. It also oversees the work of the Research, Members Services and Sustainable Funding committees. The Management Council produces an Annual Report for the Trustees.

Sustainable Funding Committee

This committee meets on an ad hoc basis to identify sources of funding and write bids to trusts and other grant giving bodies to ensure that the society remains financially secure by creating and monitoring a sustainable funding strategy. It has five members and it reports to the Management Council.

Members Services Committee

Composes of five members this committee meets ad hoc to review the society’s services to members and receive requests to improve its services. It reports to the Management Council

Research Committee

Meets on an ad hoc basis to identify and prioritise subjects for future research on various aspects of Pernicious Anaemia. The committee consists of three members. It reports to the Management Council.
